School Children and Winter Safety

  • Remind children to keep a safe distance from the main roads as they’re waiting for the school bus in the morning.
  • Visibility may be limited due to weather conditions such as fog, snow or other weather conditions and early morning and late afternoon when it’s darker outside.
  • Wearing bright colours or reflective clothing will aid in increasing the visibility of children.
  • Even toques or backpacks with reflective material will help them be more visible. This will make them more visible to snowplows, school bus drivers, industry trucks and regular traffic.
  • Stand back towards the fence-line or further in the driveways away from snow build up, icy patches or any flying debris from passing vehicles.
  • While graders, snowplows and other industry vehicles have warning lights, any extra measures taken by you will help to keep kids safe.
  • Building a child bus shelter back from the road will help keep kids away from traffic and also protect them from wind, snow or rain.
